United scrape past Lancing

Hastings United scraped past lower grade Lancing 2-1 after extra-time tonight (Tuesday).

An extra-time goal from Zac Attwood, pictured, spared United’s blushes in a forgettable Sussex Senior Cup second round tie at The Pilot Field.

In a first half of few chances, Lancing took the lead with a 43rd minute goal against the run of play when Graham Martin headed in Dan Turner’s right wing cross.

The impressive Jack Dixon equalised in the 63rd minute after playing a lovely one-two with Lee Carey, but the scores remained level after 90 minutes so an additional half-hour was required.

United, who gave a debut to new signing Matt Whitehead, grabbed the winner in the 109th minute. Kenny Pogue’s shot went through the goalkeeper’s hands onto the crossbar and Attwood nodded in the rebound.

The U’s will travel to Crawley Down in round three. A full report will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.

Hastings (4-3-3): Armstrong-Ford; Dixon, Jirbandey, Manning, Whitehead; Crellin, Carey, Thomson (Sutton 57); Attwood, Pogue (Paine 119), Bolwell (Parris HT).

Tonight’s other result:

Sussex County League, Division 1: SIDLEY UNITED 4 Shoreham 0.
