Scoring goals is not usually a problem for the Commoners, whose forwards Lewis Hole and Jamie Crone have nearly 45 between them so far this season.

But Common have failed to find the net in their last three Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One matches and have lost all of them.

Common player-manager Russell Eldridge said: “The effort and endeavour have been good, but we’re just lacking that something at the moment - that little bit of spark.

“Maybe we need that goal to give us that little bit of a boost, to get ourselves in the lead and then we can build from there. We’ve struggled in the last few games in terms of creating the opportunities that we maybe normally would.

“We’ve not scored for three games, which is disappointing. We’re working the ball into the final third, but we’re unable to create those opportunities and it’s something we need to improve on moving forward if we’re going to get some positive results.”

Common are eighth in the table at present, although only Langney Wanderers have played fewer matches. The first of their three remaining games before Easter is at home to 11th-placed Steyning Town on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

Common will be keen to atone for a 4-0 defeat in October’s reverse fixture on a day when absolutely nothing went right.

“At the moment we’re just a little bit deflated and we need to show a bit of togetherness in terms of rallying round each other,” added Eldridge, who spent part of the previous meeting with Steyning in goal. “We just need that little bit of a spark to get us on the front foot as opposed to on the back foot.”
