Westies close in on attacking duo

Westfield were this week closing in on two attacking players from Sidley United.

The Sussex County Football League Division Two club was hoping to complete the signings of Kevin Bird and Terry Payne in their battle against the drop.

Westfield joint manager Tony Harris said: “As long as it all goes through we’ll be delighted to get them in. We need some attacking options.”

Payne, pictured, has had more than one spell at Westfield in the past and had a run in the Hastings United side during John Lambert’s time in charge at The Pilot Field.

He was Sidley United’s 15-goal leading scorer in Sussex Division One last season, but living in London, his availability has been infrequent this term.

The jet-heeled Bird, who lives in Tunbridge Wells, has scored two goals for Sidley last season and this, but left the Blues last month after struggling to hold down a regular place in the starting line-up.

Former Hastings reserve team player Bird was due to put pen to paper on Wednesday night and is expected to be available this weekend, but Sidley are requesting Payne’s tracksuit be returned before agreeing to his transfer.
