Woodley suffers blood clot scare

Rye United footballer Luke Woodley suffered complications after an operation on a facial injury.

The versatile wide player, pictured, underwent surgery on Monday to the injury sustained colliding with goalkeeper Josh Pelling during the 3-1 win over Worthing United 12 days ago.

Rye manager Scott Price explained: “He had an operation to fit a metal plate and as far as they could see everything went okay. But after the operation the surgeon managed to catch him before he walked out (of hospital).

“He noticed his face was too swollen and got him straight back to theatre. During the operation he had a blood clot just behind his eye hence why he was bleeding in the mouth as he was leaving.

“He stayed in two nights and had the blood drained away from his eye. He’s all good now and he’s out of hospital looking like the elephant man, but apparently it was quite a scary moment.”

Having been very much a fringe player in 2010/11, Woodley has established himself as a regular in the starting line-up this term and Price said last week that he has arguably been one of Rye’s three best players so far.
