Luke gets in swing as golf pro

A talented golfer from St Leonards has taken the first step on the road to a successful professional career.

Luke Cornford, who is attached to Cooden Beach Golf Club in Bexhill, has booked his place on the PGA EuroPro Tour for the 2012 season.

The 24-year-old came through two qualifying events in the first half of this month to earn a spot on the leading developmental golf circuit in Europe.

Having turned professional at the start of the year, Cornford came tied 27th in the Final Qualifying School at Frilford Heath GC, Oxon, from April 11-13 with a two-under-par total of 214 for the three rounds.

The top 30 of the 240 competitors gained category three membership, making them eligible for every event on the schedule.

Cornford reached the Final Qualifying School by virtue of coming tied eighth in the Qualifying School Stage One event at Mottram Hall, Cheshire, from April 3-4 with a three-over-par total of 147 for the two rounds.

Having played in all the major amateur tournaments and represented Sussex at all levels, Cornford is now gearing up for the first event of the 2012 PGA EuroPro Tour season - the Motocaddy Masters - at Wensum Valley, Norfolk, next week.
