Hastings AC puts on quite a show

Hastings Athletic Club received widespread praise for its successful hosting of the South East Schools' Inter-Counties Cross-Country on Saturday.

The local club, which staged the event on behalf of the Sussex Schools’ Athletic Association, has had lots of positive feedback from many visitors to a windy and muddy Bexhill Down.

Terry Skelton, who organised the event and was at the venue very early in the morning setting up, said: “It was a big honour for the club and it went very well. It was a long day for us, but other counties were saying it was the best marked out and organised Inter-Counties they’ve ever been to.

“I also had an email from Reg Hook, who’s president of Sussex Schools’ (Athletic Association), thanking everyone from Hastings AC who helped out at the weekend. He said he had so many emails from other counties saying how well the course was set out and was very well organised.”

It was the Sussex Schools’ Athletic Association’s turn to promote the match this year, and teams from Berkshire, Essex, Hampshire, Kent, Sussex and Surrey battled it out.

Many athletes who have already qualified to represent their county teams at the English Schools’ Cross-Country Championships chose not to compete, but the standard on show was still very high.

The stand-out performances among local athletes came from Maya Ramnarine and Louise Nash.

Ramnarine (Robertsbridge Community College) came seventh in the junior girls’ race - the first of six events during the afternoon - and was the second highest placed runner in the Sussex squad which won the team prize.

Harmony Cooper (Rye College) was 16th overall and the fifth Sussex finisher in the same race. She is likely to join Ramnarine in the Sussex squad for the English Schools’ Championships.

Amalie Primdal (Battle Abbey) and Evie Clements (Robertsbridge Community College) also ran for Sussex in that event.

Nash (William Parker) finished sixth overall and second Sussex runner in the senior girls’ race. Having already qualified for the English Schools’ Championships, Nash is really coming back to form after being out for a couple of years.

Sophie Markwick was 17th overall and the fifth Sussex finisher in the same race. All of the runners mentioned represent Hastings AC.

Speaking of Hastings AC, the club will seek to round-off a very good Sussex Cross-Country League season - both individually and on a team basis - with some more good results in the final match at Hickstead this coming Saturday.
