Having won their opening match of the Division Three South East season last month by a comfortable margin, Hastings clinched their second match on Sunday in even more emphatic fashion.

Again making the most of home advantage, Hastings prevailed by some 86 points over their nearest competitors in a pretty strong line-up at Ark William Parker Academy.

Some splendid Hastings performances were highlighted by Louisa James, who broke her own league record for the women’s hammer with a throw in excess of 60 metres.

Although the women’s team was somewhat depleted by exam commitments, Ellen Crombie won the 1,500m in a really good time and did superbly to come second in her first ever attempt at the 1,500m steeplechase.

Women’s team manager Elise Lovell was limited over the amount of events she could do because of the foot injury which forced her to pull out of the previous weekend’s England Combined Events Championships, but she still managed to win the shot, javelin, long jump and 100m hurdles.

The women’s 4x100m relay team produced a superb performance to win its race in a time just 0.1 seconds outside the long-standing club record.

As for the men, Hastings were dominant in the middle distance events. Steve Baldock and Ryan Morrissy won the A and B string 800m respectively, with Baldock leading from start to finish.

Rhys Boorman and Gary Foster won the A and B string 3,000m respectively, as well as the 3,000m steeplechase.

Although these were the stand-out performances, key to Hastings’ success was athletes throughout the squad chipping in with valuable points, even in unfamiliar events.

The atmosphere at the track was excellent and the club wished to thank all the volunteers who helped the day run so smoothly.

Hastings AC’s young guns, meanwhile, were in action at the latest Youth Development League fixture in Lewes on Saturday.

The absence of some key performers was felt as Hastings finished in fourth place, but there were good displays from several athletes.

Harmony Cooper continued her rich vein of form by winning the under-15 girls’ 800m, 300m and being part of the victorious 4x300m relay team.

That relay team also included Maya Ramnarine, who ran well to win the under-15 girls’ 1,500m and B string 300m. Newcomer Dellicia Pascall impressed by winning the under-13 girls’ 200m.
