Heavy loss was harsh says skipper

The 6-1 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove II on Saturday was a touch harsh on South Saxons Hockey Club.

That’s the view of captain Paddy Cornish, who thinks his side’s performance warranted more from the South Hockey League Kent/Sussex - Regional 2 encounter.

Cornish said: “We could have got a lot more on another day. The performances were decent throughout the side. Brighton were a different class to anyone else we have played and I thought we held our own.”

The Saxons skipper says that confidence is still high in the Saxons camp, despite a winless streak which stretches back to the opening day 3-2 triumph at Sevenoaks II.

After the trip to Crawley this coming Saturday, second-bottom Saxons will have played all of the division’s top seven teams and none of the bottom four.

He added: “We’ve played a lot of the big teams and we go into every game thinking we can get a result. Crawley will be similar to Brighton, but if we can be decent defensively, then we have a chance of getting some points.”

Standings (played-points): 1 Blackheath & OE 7-16, 2 Lewes II 7-15, 3 Brighton & Hove II 7-13, 4 King’s & Alleyn’s 6-13, 5 Crawley 6-13, 6 Mid-Sussex 7-10, 7 Sevenoaks II 7-7, 8 Sutton Valence II 6-6, 9 Cliftonville 6-6, 10 SOUTH SAXONS 6-5, 11 Canterbury III 7-0.
