Keen to build on winning starts

Hastings & Bexhill head coach Kevin Smith was pleased with an “excellent start” to the season.

The rugby club began its Kent One campaign with a 46-0 win at home to Old Gravesendians last weekend - the biggest winning margin of anyone in the division on the opening day.

Smith said: “It was an excellent start. The guys really worked well. The first half was a continuation of some of the best games we had last season. We found a nice pattern and played some good rugby.

“I think the scrummage has improved markedly. We’re not content with just being comfortable on our own ball; we’re looking to move forward and drive forward. I think the backs look sharper now than they’ve ever looked.

“If we can keep that consistency of players and don’t lose track of what we’re trying to achieve, I think we’ll do very well,” continued Smith. “I think we’re in a good position, but it’s early days.”

H&B’s next two games are both away from their William Parker Sports College base, starting with a trip to Beccehamian tomorrow (Saturday). Beccs were beaten 48-31 away to Cranbrook on Saturday.

Rye, meanwhile, will be looking for more of the same when they entertain Lewes II in Sussex One tomorrow. The New Roaders produced an impressive display on the opening day last weekend to win 19-13 at home to Brighton II.

“Lewes will be very difficult because their first team is a real class outfit but how much inter-change there is between the teams who knows,” said Rye chairman Tony Pierce.

“We’ll wait and see what turns up. Obviously they won’t be any mugs but if we play as well as we did last Saturday then we should do alright.” Kick-off at New Road is 3pm.
