The St Leonards-based athlete had to make do with a fifth place finish in the men’s 1,500m final at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Sunday.

Having safely come through his heat the previous day, as a fast finisher Emanuel would’ve been unconcerned about the sedentary early pace in the final. It meant it was a mad rush for the medals over the final 200 metres and Emanuel was squeezed into fifth place in a time 3:45.90s.

Charlie Grice, of Brighton Phoenix, retained his title in 3:43.41 having survived a skirmish on the final bend that saw Tom Lancashire, one of the favourites, crash to the ground.

Emanuel, who spends the bulk of his time training in the United States, qualified for the final of the men’s 3,000m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships earlier this year having won a silver medal over the same distance at the European Indoor Championships in 2015.

Elise Lovell, of Hastings Athletic Club, was also in action at the British Championships and recorded a season’s best time of 14.0 seconds when placing fourth in her women’s 100m hurdles heat.

The multi-eventer won gold in the senior women’s heptathlon at the England Athletics Combined Events Championships last year, but on this occasion was up against the nation’s top hurdles specialists.
