Local pairs beaten in bowls nationals

There was disappointment for two Hastings-based teams in the Bowls England Men’s National Pairs Championship.

The Rosemount duo of Shaun Godfrey and Glen Newton lost 24-11 to Simon Fishlock (Tongham BC, Surrey) in the first round of the Thomson-sponsored event at Beach House Park, Worthing.

And it was a similar story for the White Rock combination of Colin Nutton and Chris Surman because they succumbed 19-15 at the hands of Ray Long (Fleming Park BC, Hampshire), also in the opening stage.

Both twosomes booked their places in the nationals by reaching the County Finals, which were played at Bexhill Bowling Club on Sunday August 7. Godfrey and Newton got the better of Nutton and Surman that day 24-17.

Nutton also represented Sussex in the Bowls England National Fours Championship and Bowls England Men’s National Junior Singles Championship last week, reaching round two in the former and round one in the latter.
