South Saxons Hockey Club’s men’s first team got straight back to winning ways on Saturday.

After suffering their first Sussex Open Hockey League Division One loss of the season the previous weekend, Saxons responded with a 5-3 victory at home to Middleton.

On a foggy afternoon at Horntye Park, the home side took the lead through a short corner goal scored by Alex Coombs.

Shortly after, Olli Beal continued his fine form in front of goal after Tudor Stainsby passed at least four players on a run from the halfway line.

Middleton replied following a spot of miscommunication in the home defence, but Saxons restored their two-goal lead when Toby Reed finished a classic short corner routine which has worked so many times previously.

In the second half, Saxons’ man of the match Paddy Cornish made a brave last ditch tackle on the edge of the D before Middleton got one back to make it 3-2.

Saxons responded through a penalty flick by Coombs. The flick was awarded for a foot on the line from a shot by Reed which most thought had crossed the line.

Jamie Busbridge, back from his winter break, scored Saxons’ final goal before Middleton netted a late consolation. The matchball sponsor was Old El Paso restaurants.

It was a good performance from Saxons against strong opposition and they remain six points clear at the top ahead of the trip to bottom side Worthing II this coming Saturday.
