A night to remember

THE inaugural Bexhill Observer Charity Shield proved to be a great success as a crowd of around 650 fans descended on Gullivers.

Sidley United won 5-0 against Bexhill United in a cracking atmosphere which made for a fantastic occasion.

As well as the football, spectators were treated to fireworks, the glimpse of a number of club stalwarts and three male streakers who raced onto the pitch in the second half. Thankfully, they had the decency to keep on their underpants.

Bexhill chairman Dave Harris, who worked tirelessly to promote the event, said: "It was a great night and I had a lot of the ex-players come up to me to say what a wonderful occasion it was and that they hadn't known an atmosphere like it round the ground for many years."

The event raised 2,200 in gate receipts for the two clubs while the Sidley Sports Club did brisk business behind the bar A raffle also generated 226 for St Michael's Hospice.

Sidley's goals came from Kevin Rose (2), West Tate, Paul Balch and Graham Morris (penalty).

The teams are due to contest the second leg at the Polegrove in late August or early September.
