Old King John clinch Sunday trophy

THE first of this season's Hastings & East Sussex Sunday Football League finals saw Old John King lift the Wisden Plate with a 2-1 win over Spartan Seniors at the Pilot Field.

Described as a good advert for Sunday morning football, the match was contested in the right spirit between two teams intent on playing the game the right way.

Spartan opened the scoring four minutes before half time when Michael O'Callaghan unleashed a superb 20-yard free kick. OJK responded within six minutes of the start of the second half through a flicked header from the experienced Kevin Bevis, and 12 minutes from time prolific marksman Carl Oxingham grabbed what proved to be the winner with a neat finish to the delight of OKJ's loyal band of supporters.

After the match Oxingham proposed to his girlfriend on the pitch, and, it is presumed she said yes.

The Pilot Field hosts the Observer Cup Final on Sunday April 3 when Division Two winners Bexhill AAC II take on Division Three champions-elect Old King John in what should be an intriguing contest, kick-off 5pm.
