Fast-growing sport won't get you in a pickle

Many sportspeople have been looking forward to getting back in action – and pickleballers are no exception.

As outdoor facilities have opened again this addictive, racket sport like no other is being played on the tennis courts in Egerton Park, Bexhill

Pickleball is a mash-up of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Played on a badminton sized court, it an accessible sport for people of all abilities, ages including wheelchair users.

Four of these have been marked out on one tennis court in Egerton Park.

This fast growing sport, enjoyed by 4.1 million players in 55 countries worldwide, is a great outdoor alternative.

It’s easy to learn and play but still challenging as skills improve – more information can be found on the pickleball England website at www.pickleballengland.org.

Pickleball in Bexhill is the beneficiary of donated equipment from World Pickleball Federation (WPF), Paddletek and Gamma to help grow the awareness and adoption of pickleball as a game for all and for life.

Local player Rachel Mackriell said: “Having spare paddles to put in the hands of local people that have never played it will help promote the sport.

“We couldn’t wait for the resumption of outdoor recreation within the rule of six. Pickleball was introduced to the UK about ten years ago. Our club started at Freedom Leisure Centre in 2019 but the number of players has increased by more than 25 per cent during 2020 when Covid made us play outdoors.”
