Hastings AC took part in the Virtual National Road Relays in April – open to clubs around the country to replace the cancelled fixture – and it was really well received.

Hastings AC coach Peter Baker and secretary and IT manager Katie Arnold discussed the possibility of holding a competition with Hastings Runners to give members the chance to take part in a timed organised race to keep up moreale and so training would not be wasted.

The result is a friendly, competitive event that will help runners stay focused while raising money for a good cause.

The distance has been set at three miles to test competitors over a shorter distance without them having to worry about equalling or beating a 5k PB.

Organisers wanted this to be more about team spirit and working as a team – albeit virtually.

Andy Lee, club secretary at Hastings Runners, was contacted and the event grew.

Competitors will take part over this weekend (May 16-17) and of course must adhere to social distancing rules while running the flattest possible route of their choice over three miles. Competitors will upload their times and there will be a winning men and women’s team based on age-graded results, which opens the competition up to all age groups and not just the fastest finishers.

The event is free to enter and hosted by Hastings AC, but entrants are urged to donate to The Friends of Conquest Hospital.

Hastings AC and Hastings Runners are the two longest established clubs in the area and were keen to join up at this time of separation to show true Hastings spirit.
