Lewes Wanderers get wheels turning in national championship

The illustrious Road Time Trials Council National 10-mile Championship involved half-a-dozen Lewes Wanderers.

Defending champion Joss Lowden was unable to start, but her club-mates did her proud.

It was held in Berkshire on a stretch of the A4 between Newbury and Hungerford and promoted by Newbury Velo Cycle Club.

Racing for trainSharp, Sally Turner stopped the watch at 22min 31sec to place 20th female overall and fourth fastest veteran (over-40).

Anya Tamplin (URDT) recorded 22:46 for 26th overall, third on the podium for espoirs (under-23s) and a massive personal best. In her first appearance at this level Anna Dwyer performed admirably, 52nd in 24:39.

The competition was stiff among the men as both Brett Davis (trainSharp) and Nick Dwyer put in strong rides not reflected in their finishing positions.

Davis’ 21:02 granted him equal 96th with Dwyer 10 spots behind in 21:10.

Turner and trainSharp team-mate Lisa Davis were back in action in the Sussex Cyclists Association “sporting” 25-mile time-trial. Turner tamed the roads near Loxwood in a new course record of 1hr 2min 15seconds. She took the victory with Davis a clear second in 1:04:24.

A few weeks earlier, Lewes Wanderer Roger Hutchings ventured to Cambridgeshire to take part in a 10-mile event run by Chronos RT. It was worth the journey as he set a new personal best of 22min 57se,c finishing 33rd of 48.

Last week he switched to hill-climbing n the East Grinstead Cycling Club event up Legsheath Lane from Weirwood Reservoir towards Wych Cross. He was 10th in 6min 46sec.
