Lockdown won't stop HY Runners in their tracks

In keeping with the original lockdown, virtual challenges are again red hot. Runners are asked to complete each new challenge and post photographic evidence of their elapsed time on the HY Facebook group.

The challenge can be done at any time on a given day. These challenges are a great way to keep members training, motivated and connected virtually with one another.

First up for HY Runners was The Battery Hill Challenge. The task was to start at St Andrews Church at Coastguard Lane in Fairlight; run all the way down to Waites Lane (about one mile), turn round and come straight back up again.

The steepest part of the gradient is 15 per cent with the average gradient being 6.2 per cent. So the easy part was going down!

First runner back was David Ervine, who flew down so fast, he made the turning point in 4min 50sec. Coming back up, the gradient took its toll as his total time was 12.43. First female back was Shannon Hopkins-Parry in 13.52.

Many juniors also took on the challenge. Absolutely flying were Isabella Buchanan (aged nine) in 15.05 and Megan Hopkins-Parry (aged 10) in 15.23.

In total 61 adults and children completed this week’s challenge. The next challenge is a 5k parkrun route for adults and for the junior athletes, the option of 1K or 2K along the prom.
