Paralympic legend helps Hastings runners cover the globe

David Weir had joined HY Runners and is boosting their round-the-world challenge

A total of 24,901 miles will need to be covered to run the circumference of the world.

The challenge started last week and was initiated virtually at Hastings Town Hall.

By the end of day one, the club had clocked up just under 1000 miles and were ‘heading through Spain’. And by the middle of this week, they’s passed the 6,500-mile mare, equivalent to reaching Dubai.

With charity events cancelled because of the pandemic, funds are depleted for St Michael’s Hospice, who provide responsive palliative care and bereavement support across Hastings and Rother. A number of HY Runners have shared personal stories in relation to St Michael’s and explained why it is so important.

Since announcing the fundraising challenge, the club has had an influx of new members, many inspired by the fundraising challenge.

One of the new members is British Paralympic wheelchair athlete David Weir.

He won six golds at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games and has won the London Marathon eight times. David was born with a spinal cord transection that left him unable to use his legs.

He is an inspiration to HY Runners with his contributions to the challenge.

HY Runners now look forward to seeing the mileage and raised funds continue to rise.
