Ten-year-old Hastings athlete Isabella is one to watch
HY Runners are back with a bang as competitive racing returns – with plenty of PB times being recorded.
Three of HY’s quickest runners competed against the clock at the Ardingly senior 5k and junior one-mile event.
Representing HY in the Junior event was Isabella Buchanan who completed her mile with a PB of 5:28, said to be the quickest time in the entire country for a ten-year-old – and the fourth quickest in the UK up to the age of 13. Buchanan is getting stronger every time she runs.
First finisher in the 5k was David Irvine with a 21-second PB in 16:27 on his 19th birthday. Irvine was followed home by 46-year-old Carl Adams with a huge PB of 16:51.
HY runners took on the Headcorn half marathon in Kent last Sunday. The Headcorn half has a good flat course with quick times expected andHY Runners did not disappoint, with ten out of 12 runners who entered achieving PBs.
Third overall in 1:16:07 was William Carey. David Ervine was another celebrating a PB, in 1:17:39, and third home for HY was Oliver Carey in 1:18:50.
Carl Adams managed a five-minute PB in 1:18:58.

There was a big PB for Oliver Lockwood in 1:29:19, and one for Alfie Johnstone in 1:34:49 on his debut at this distance. He hadn’t run beyond 10k in either training or as a race. Fiona Norman Brown achieved a PB with a 1:37:39 finish. Completing the PB set for HY was Rob Sharpe in 1:40:21 which was 16 minutes quicker than his previous best.
HY Runners scooped the race’s top team award.
Head coach Terry Skelton said: “It’s great for the runners and the club that there have been so many personal best times achieved over the past couple of weeks. Racing can’t always be about personal bests but to have so many over a two-week period is testimony to how hard the runners have worked, particularly in lockdown during the winter months.
“We are delighted to be running together as a group once more and to be able to compete in races again.” Anyone who wants to join in any sessions can contact Terry on 07711 777363.
