Robertson faces great O'Sullivan

Bexhill snooker professional Jimmy Robertson faced the great Ronnie O'Sullivan in a live televised encounter last night (Wednesday).

Robertson was beaten 4-0 by a hugely impressive O’Sullivan in a Welsh Open third round match screened live on Eurosport.

World number 38 Robertson lost the opening frame 73-21, and didn’t score a point in the next two as fifth-ranked O’Sullivan fashioned superb breaks of 94 and 131.

Robertson had a chance to pinch frame four after potting a good long yellow, but was hugely unfortunate to snooker himself on the green in the process. He duly failed to hit the green and O’Sullivan cleared up to clinch the match.

The 29-year-old Robertson previously pulled off a very good 4-1 win over 27th-ranked Michael Holt in round two on Tuesday morning. He had to come from 3-2 down to earn a 4-3 victory in Monday’s first round clash against 105th-ranked Michael Wild even though he compiled four fifty-plus breaks.

St Leonards potter Mark Davis, ranked 25, was also beaten in the last 32 yesterday, losing out 4-2 to world number eight Barry Hawkins.

Davis, 43, won the opening two frames, the second of them thanks largely to a break of 68, but Hawkins, a former World Championship finalist, reeled off the next four relatively comfortably with top breaks of 56 and 78.

Davis saw off 111th-ranked James Cahill 4-1 in round two, beginning the match with a magnificent break of 134. He also fashioned four breaks over 60 en route to a 4-2 victory over 18-year-old Chinese amateur Zhao Xintong in round one.

Bexhill-based amateur Leo Fernandez came from 3-0 down to clinch a remarkable 4-3 win over world number 19 Kyren Wilson in round one on Monday aided by breaks of 64 and 52.

Fernandez was beaten 4-1, however, by world number 46 Kurt Maflin in round two on Tuesday morning. Maflin went 2-0 up with runs of 75 and 52, and although Fernandez clinched frame three, the Norwegian took the fourth and fifth.
