Bad weekend for rugby clubs

It was a Saturday to forget for rugby in the area.

Hastings & Bexhill suffered an embarrassing 17-8 defeat away to Seaford, while Rye were thrashed 101-9 away to Sussex One champions-elect Uckfield.

H&B took a brief lead in windy conditions through a Paul Sandeman penalty, but a try in the corner put Seaford 5-3 ahead at the turnaround.

Seaford scored again from a lineout in H&B’s 22 to make it 10-3 and extended their advantage with a converted try in the corner. Anthony Roche pulled a try back for H&B, yet it wasn’t enough.

Rye actually spent the first 10 minutes camped in Uckfield territory, but a missed tackle led to the hosts’ opening try and the floodgates opened thereafter. Rye’s points came in the form of three Luke Cross penalties.

Full reports on both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
