Saxons face seven weeks on sidelines

South Saxons will contest their biggest game of the season so far not having played for seven weeks.

Saxons will take on Lewes III in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One on Saturday January 8 having been sidelined since the 8-2 win over Crowborough on November 20.

Pete Watters’ side has endured four consecutive postponements - three because of the freezing weather and the other due to the death of a player from the opposing club - and the league now shuts down for the festive break.

Watters said: “It’s incredibly frustrating, we’ve been desperate to play. I’m sure people will look after themselves. I’ll see if I can get a group to go running and play a bit of five-a-side, and I expect to beat Lewes.”

Saxons are currently fourth in the table having won six and drawn one of their first eight games. Lewes are one place and one point better off having played an extra game, although Saxons have a superior goal difference.

Both teams, along with second-placed Penguin (who have three points more than Saxons but having played two extra matches), are chasing a runners-up finish behind unbeaten leaders Lewes II - and with it a promotion play-off against the equivalent team from the Kent division.
