Saxons hit seven in second half

South Saxons scored seven second half goals to win 7-1 in a remarkable match at home to a Hailsham side which picked up seven yellow cards.

Saxons’ biggest win of the South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One season kept them third in the table, five points behind leaders Mid-Sussex II.

Captain Paddy Cornish said: “For them to get all seven (yellow cards) and us to get none was a little bit strange. There probably could’ve been more; it was just ridiculous.

“It was standard Hailsham. They try and wind us up. They don’t come to play hockey; they come to get in our heads, and try and beat us like that. We’ve been suckered a couple of times in the past, but this time it just didn’t work.”

Saxons trailed at the break to a goal from a mishit short corner despite Hailsham having four players sin-binned during the first half and at one stage being down to eight men.

A forthright and uncompromising talk from team manager Ken Coombs seemed to do the trick. Just two minutes after the restart, George Eldridge drag flicked a short corner high into the net.

Shortly afterwards, Adam Smithers scored his first goal for the team by finishing off a flowing move. Smithers then finished off another move initiated by man of the match Alex Coombs.

A Jamie Busbridge shot from just inside the circle eluded the Hailsham goalkeeper for number four. The fifth and sixth soon followed, and an own goal after good work from Coombs completed the scoring. Saxons go to Middleton & Bognor tomorrow (Saturday) without the unavailable Cornish.

Saxons: Wedmore, Reed, Watters, Cload, Eldridge, Stainsby, Burnett, Coombs, Smithers, Busbridge, Cornish, Orr.
