Saxons primed for Lewes invasion

Pete Watters believes South Saxons can pull off an upset against the runaway leaders on Saturday.

Second-placed Saxons will entertain a Lewes II side which has won all 13 of its South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One matches so far, scoring a massive 106 goals in the process.

Saxons captain Watters said: “It’s going to be incredibly tough, there’s no two ways about it. They’re absolutely cruising the league, and thumping teams left, right and centre. They’re going to come with huge confidence.

“But we’ve got a really good chance of causing an upset. Realistically, if we get a draw I’ll be over the moon, but we definitely have the potential and if we play to our best we can get a good result.”

Saxons, who are 11 points adrift of Lewes having played a game more, were thrashed 7-1 in October’s reverse fixture - their first defeat in more than 18 months - but were without some key players and had to adjust to an unfamiliar water-based pitch.

Sam Bunday should be fit after missing last weekend’s 5-0 win at Crawley II with a badly bruised hip. Push-back at Horntye Park Sports Complex is 1.30pm.
