Saxons’ promotion dream back on

South Saxons have received a lifeline in their quest for promotion from South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One.

Their chances of finishing runners-up and going into a play-off with the equivalent-placed team in Kent looked to be receding after losing 2-1 to nearest rivals Lewes III on Saturday.

But Lewes then went down 2-0 away to East Grinstead IV on Sunday which means that Saxons will almost certainly finish second if they win their final two matches of the season.

Captain Pete Watters said: “It’s a massive lifeline and it’s great to have it back in our hands. We’ve played absolutely fantastic at times and awful at other times.”

Saxons are currently three points behind Lewes, but with a game in hand and a vastly superior goal difference -

something which could prove crucial in the final analysis.

Watters’ side will host Middleton & Bognor and Lewes will round-off their campaign at home to Grinstead on Saturday. Saxons will conclude their programme away to fifth-placed Grinstead the following weekend.

The full article and a report on the Lewes game will appear in Friday’s Hastings Observer.
