Saxons return with friendly fire

The hockey players of South Saxons are poised to return to the astroturf after a four-week festive break.

South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One leaders Saxons will travel to Ashford II in a friendly tomorrow (Saturday) - their first game since the 2-1 league victory at Middleton & Bognor on December 10.

Their captain Paddy Cornish said: “We’ve got (third-placed) Penguins (in the league) the week after so we want to be over the Christmas period, and back into playing ways and ready to go.”

The game should be a useful workout for Saxons as Ashford are top of the equivalent-standing South Hockey League Kent Area - Division One with nine wins from their first 11 matches.

Oscar Rogers is fit again having been told to rest a niggling knee problem before Christmas, while former captain Pete Watters, pictured, is available for selection following his self-imposed exile.

Jamie Busbridge expects to recover from his fractured thumb by next weekend, although by that time he will be going skiing for two weeks and will therefore miss the opening couple of league games in 2012.

Cornish plans to take a squad of 13 across the county border as the seconds are without a fixture. Saxons are two points clear of second-placed Horsham II having picked up 29 points from a possible 33 so far.
