Saxons are six points clear at the top of Sussex Open Hockey League Division One having picked up 25 points from a possible 27 so far this season.

Busbridge said: “It’s a bit of a turnup from last season (when Saxons finished fourth and struggled away from home). I didn’t expect this at all. Just drawing once and winning everything else so far is a big surprise.

“On the face of it we seem to have lost a couple of good players, but everyone’s just working really hard and playing as a team, and it’s paying off.

“Whether we can remain unbeaten remains to be seen, but I’m confident we can go on to win it.”

Saxons have two more games before the festive break - away to fifth-placed Brighton & Hove III tomorrow (Saturday) and second-bottom East Grinstead III next weekend.

“Brighton are a reasonably good side, but everyone’s buzzing and we’re taking that into the games,” added Busbridge.
