Saxons will begin their 2015/16 Sussex Open Hockey League Division One campaign with a home game against Horsham III this Saturday. Push-back is at 1.30pm.

“We’re hoping to get promoted,” said Busbridge, who is keen to develop more of a passing game. “Certainly that will be the target and we’ll see how realistic that is over the coming weeks.”

Saxons finished fourth last term when their home form was as excellent as their away record was poor.

The Horntye Park-based club has lost Tudor Stainsby and Harry Reece to university, and Sam Bunday has gone back to university, but Ben Simmons has come in to the side and Dan Burnett may well feature more this season.

The early signs have been fairly encouraging. Saxons pulled off a very good 2-1 win in a friendly against higher grade Mid-Sussex last month and also won a Sussex Plate tie away to Littlehampton.

Busbridge is keen for Saxons to pick up points in their early fixtures - against teams who he anticipates won’t be at the top end of the table - before they face potentially tougher tests against sides like Lewes II and Worthing II.
