Sidley handed home draw in FA Vase

SIDLEY United player-manager Liam Barham fancies his team's chances of making an even greater impact in this year's FA Vase.

The Blues are through to the last 64 in the national competition after celebrating a 4-2 win over Erith Town on Saturday.

Their reward is another home draw in the third round against South Western League outfit St Blazey on Saturday December 10.

"It's a great draw. I'm glad it's down here rather than all the way over there," said Barham. "At this stage of the competition the only thing you can hope for is that you're at home and we fancy our chances against anyone in the Vase. There's a little window of opportunity opening up for us."

Sidley pocketed a handy 1,000 for coming through the test posed by Kent Premier Division Erith in an entertaining clash dominated by the superb finishing of four-goal hero Peter Baker.

Cornish club St Blazey should provide a stiffer challenge because they will roll into Gullivers with a daunting reputation having won their league six times in the last seven years.

Based just a couple miles from the Eden Project, The Green and Blacks currently lie ninth in the table but they have games in hand on their rivals.

They booked their date with Sidley with a 3-2 win away to Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Barham, who will be leading one of only two remaining Sussex clubs into the third round - the other being Arundel, went on: "I really hope we get through this round because people will really start talking about us and then who knows."

"It will be very tough," said Sidley chairman Dickie Day. "I think they've won their league for the last three years, but in many ways, I'm just glad we've not been drawn away."
