Slight change to big race course

There will be a slight change to the route used for the Hastings Half Marathon in 2012.

It has been decided that the speed humps introduced in Rock-a-Nore Road are too dangerous for runners to negotiate, especially at that stage of the race when a little weary.

As the 13.1-mile route starts and finishes at lamp-post no.4 in Sea Road, it was therefore necessary to find a part of the course to take the place of the up-and-back section of Rock-a-Nore Road to keep the distance correct.

Event organisers, the Hastings Lions Club, called in the services of registered course measurer Rob Bright and spent a day with him in Hastings, remeasuring the route and coming up with the changes that needed to be made.

Those changes will be between the eight-mile and 11-mile marks, with runners coming out of Winchelsea Road and turning left into Rye Road for 200 metres, then making a u-turn back down Rye Road to Old Top Road.

This means that the nine-mile point will be in Middle Road (but the drink station will still be at The co-operative food store in Ore Village) and the 10-mile mark will be in Dudley Road.

When coming out of All Saints Street in Hastings Old Town, the runners will now turn right onto the A259 along Marine Parade instead of turning left along Rock-a-Nore Road.

There are therefore no changes to the roads used for the event, and all road closures and diversions will stay the same. The Police and Highways Agency have been given full details, and no objections have been received.

The 28th Hastings Half Marathon will take place on Sunday March 25, 2012 and entries are already coming in online at www.hastings-half.co.uk. The traditional paper entry forms will be available, as usual, in September.
