Snooker ace begins tour bid

SNOOKER ace Jimmy Robertson began his quest to qualify for the world's top 64 on the main professional tour for the 2005-06 season with a successful performance at Pontin's in Prestatyn, Wales.

Playing in the first of the campaign's four Challenge Tour events, the O'Sullivan's and Q-Ball (Eastbourne) based professional reached the quarter-finals where he was thumped 5-1 by James Tatton from Bicester in Oxfordshire.

Robertson, 18, actually won the opening frame but "just didn't play well at all" after that according to father Brian as Tatton rattled off five frames on the trot with the help of a highest break of 82.

The Bexhill teenager had previously beaten Stephen Welsby (Liverpool) 4-2, Gary Lees (Oldham) 4-0, Peter Lines (Leeds) 5-4 and Lee Spick (Mansfield) 5-2. Robertson's highest break was 96 against Lees.

"It was better than we anticipated," Brian continued. "He hasn't had a run like that for a long time so we're pretty pleased and it's given him a good start to the season. But we've got to do this for another four times so we don't want to get too carried away."

Robertson lies in sixth place after the first event - a position he needs to maintain if he is to gain promotion to the prestigious LG Electronics tour.
