Lee Emanuel successfully defended the men’s 3,000m title at the Indoor British Championships with a brilliant victory in Sheffield on Saturday afternoon.

Emanuel ran the perfect race, steaming clear of Tom Farrell (Border Harriers) over the final 300 metres to win by some 10 metres in 7:55.67.

The early pace was not fast enough to push him to the World Indoor Championships entry standard of 7:50, but times from last year count too and Emanuel ran a personal best of 7:44.48 to win silver at the European Indoor Championships in Prague last March.

The 31-year-old will hope therefore to earn selection for the Great Britain team to compete at the World Indoor Championships, which will take place in Portland, USA, from March 17-20.

Emanuel, who spends the bulk of the time training in the United States, achieved the World Championship entry standard in the 1,500m the previous weekend with a time of 3:38.68 at the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix.

He also competed in the 1,500m at the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Poland having won the British indoor title over that distance a few weeks earlier.

Elise Lovell, of Hastings Athletic Club, finished fourth of six in her women’s 60m hurdles heat yesterday (Sunday) afternoon in 8:80.

Lovell’s time was 0.09 seconds slower than she clocked in winning silver at last month’s South of England Athletic Association Senior & Under 20 Indoor Championships.

Lovell - who represented Great Britain at the European Cup Combined Events Super League last summer - is a heptathlete and was competing against hurdles specialists.
