Saxons struck three times in the first half and added four more after the break to record their second Sussex Open Hockey League Division One win of the season with a 7-1 success against a youthful Lewes third XI.

Deploying a new 3-4-3 formation with vice-captain James Bunday at the helm in Jamie Busbridge’s absence, Saxons took an early lead through Alex Coombs following a nice move.

A sensational solo effort from Harry Reece soon followed to put Saxons 2-0 up, which seemed to restore the confidence throughout the side that had been missing in recent weeks.

A flurry of goals then flew in from Ollie Beal, Lighthouse man of the match Tudor Stainsby and Danny Burnett, putting the Hastings club into a commanding 5-0 lead.

A disheartened Lewes team managed to pull a goal back, but Coombs slotted another two past the away goalkeeper late on to complete his hat-trick.

The result moved Saxons up a couple of places to eighth with a goal difference bettered only by unbeaten leaders Crowborough.
