Two-horse race for hockey title

South Saxons captain Paddy Cornish reckons it’s a two-horse race for the title.

Saxons are a point clear of Horsham II at the top of South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One with Penguin four points off the pace in third.

Cornish said: “I would say it probably will be between us and them (Horsham II). Horsham have just been a different class to everyone else we’ve played so far.”

Saxons continued their unbeaten start to the season with a terrific 6-1 success away to Southwick last weekend. The Hastings club boasts the best goal difference in the division and has scored more than any other team.

“Southwick’s skipper said ‘for God’s sake get promoted because I’m fed up of losing to you’,” continued Cornish, who wants his team to make quicker starts to matches.

Saxons will return to Horntye Park Sports Complex tomorrow (Saturday, push-back 1.30pm) to face an eighth-placed Crowborough side which has won three and lost three so far. Dave Draper is unavailable.

Cornish added: “These are the sort of games where hopefully we can pick up a few more goals here and there.”
