United's big day has happy ending

NEW-LOOK Bexhill United overcame home debut nerves to claim a spirited 1-1 draw against St Francis on Bank Holiday Monday.

Substitute Steve Cresswell's stunning equaliser ten minutes from time ensured Bexhill's big day had a happy ending.

The new era at The Polegrove was given a rousing send-off with a pre-match build-up that included the return of the club's successful teams of 1957 and 1961, town Mayor Peter Fairhurst kicking the first ball, the lighting of a 4ft rocket and the Bexhill team running out to Starship's 80s rock anthem "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now".

Peter Aylett fired Saints into a 65th minute lead but Cresswell secured a point to the delight of the 206-strong crowd.

Manager Lenny Watkins said: "The crowd actually roared. I don't think that has happened here for a while."
