After a long theatre-starved year, Sedlescombe Players have announced one of everyone’s favourite things: Rogers & Hammerstein’s masterpiece, The Sound of Music. Performances will run from August 10-14.

Director Tara Buchanan will be looking for new members, as well as those she may have worked with before: “I never pre-cast, which I know is unusual and can be risky, but it also means actors trust me to pick the best from the auditions. In our last production, Jesus Christ Superstar in March 2020, we had the most incredibly talented cast, most of whom I had never met before and it turned out to be a fantastic show which ran for nine nights and was a total sell-out.

“We will need, of course, a fabulous Maria and Captain Von Trapp but also: a strong soloist for Mother Abbess, choral singing nuns, bubbly and enthusiastic Von Trapp children (stage ages five to 14), some excellent character (non-singing) adult roles and a Liesl with real star quality (stage age 16)!

“Familiarisation will be via Zoom on Sunday, February 28 from 4pm.

“Initial auditions will be via video submission by Sunday, March 14 for the children.

“If you want to join the cast, you don’t need to climb every mountain, just check out the website www.sedlescombeplayers.co.uk or FB page and get in touch.

Tara’s vision for the production is clear: “For everyone to leave happy – and singing their hearts out.

“It has been accused of being schmaltzy and/or slow – not on my watch!

“The final collaboration between Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein, The Sound of Music, is a tuneful, heart-warming story based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups of their era and captures a personal tale of growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II.

"Tomboyish young postulant Maria Rainer, whose free spirit has trouble fitting into the rules and regulations of Nonnberg Abbey, is sent by the Mother Abbess to serve as governess to 7 motherless children.

"Maria transforms the Von Trapp family home from a place of dour rules and regulations to one filled with joy & laughter…. and music.

"In the process, Maria wins the hearts of all 7 children--and their widower father, Captain Von Trapp."
