Musician Mike Hatchard will welcome jazz violinist Mikko Ville to Hastings and St Leonards on Tuesday June 2 for a gig at the Gecko Bar.
Mikko is from Finland and has been described by those who know (Herbie Flowers) as “the world’s greatest jazz violinist,” according to Mike,
He said: “I played a gig with him a few months back and well, awesome is a word I don’t often use, but I can’t think of any other.
Even if you can’t abide the violin you should see this man just to get an idea of how acute musical prowess can be. For some years he led for the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, he has toured with Antony Braxton, and is a concert master for three orchestras.
“The idea that a musician of this calibre is coming to Hastings to play a free gig on a Tuesday night is extraordinary, and I feel very flattered that he’s asked if he can work with me. I absolutely guarantee an experience you’ll love.”
Mike is playing at the Gecko Bar every week with his Svelte Tuesday experience, but last week he took his new band Gypsy Blue for its first outing ever at Respond Academy in St Leonards, which he describes as “a wonderfully intimate venue that really deserves support.”
Another piece of news is his upcoming performance with Frank Holder who was recently given a life time achievement award by The Worshipful Company of Musicians.
Mike said: “A few years ago I had the privilege of compeering Cleo Laine’s eighty-fifth birthday concert, and while the dame was stunning, Frank’s ability to sound like a young man in his prime was something else. He has a voice to die for and still plays congas with a consuming drive and passion. In short he’s one of those musicians that make you feel good to be alive, and I’m delighted that I’m appearing with him at the Beauport Park Golf Club on June 14 at 11am. We also have the virtuoso guitarist Shane Hills on the gig as well as Alistair Franklin.”
