Bexhill and District Branch Aircrew Association - May 16

ABOUT 40 members, partners and friends of the branch met for our annual Summer Lunch at Cooden Beach Golf Club on Friday, May 2.

Little did we know at the time that there was a celebrity in our midst until it was discovered that a full-length article entitled "Lancaster Gunner" in the May issue of "Aviation News" magazine focused on Colin Whiting's war service. A fitting tribute to Colin and to so many like him, including an appreciable number of our other branch members, who cheerfully endured one of the most vulnerable roles in an extremely hazardous campaign.

At our monthly meeting on Monday, May 12, Delaine Shearman, County Fundraiser for Sussex Air Ambulance which was launched at Dunsfold in June 2007, accompanied by volunteer helper Mike Barker, described the organisation's role, its capabilities and the effort involved in keeping the Air Ambulance flying 365 days a year.

With a crew of three (pilot, doctor and paramedic) on standby during daylight, the helicopter can respond very quickly throughout the county and in coordination with its Kent counterpart.

The helicopter is also equipped with a mini field operating theatre so that critical life-saving surgery can be performed on site to stabilise a casualty's condition before evacuation to an appropriate hospital. As a registered charity, Sussex Air Ambulance, which is very expensive to maintain, relies entirely on donations to fulfil this vital role.

It was heartening to learn that Bexhill has been one of this worthy cause's most responsive sources.

We look forward to the branch's Gala Fund Raising Night in aid of Bexhill RAFA Albatross Club on Saturday, May 24.

A week later, on Saturday, May 31, a performance by the RAFA President's Band will celebrate the 90th anniversary year of the Royal Air Force.

Details of both events can be obtained from the Albatross Club. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, June 9.
