Bexhill Hanoverian Study Group - May 16

Firstly, we made our way to the National Army Museum where our president, Dr Peter Boyden, Assistant Director of Collections, NAM, met us. As time was limited, we could only view a few exhibits including the Waterloo diorama. The recently assembled exhibition devoted to the troops in Helmand, Afghanistan attracted much attention. We strolled to the nearby Royal Hospital. There we were greeted by Mac, a delightfully entertaining Chelsea Pensioner. Mac explained the history of Chelsea Hospital and the life of the pensioners. We then visited the Great Hall where the walls were hung with many wonderful portraits, such as King George III, Queen Caroline, and The Duke of Marlborough. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 21 at 7.30pm in St Peter's Community Centre, Church Street, Bexhill Old Town. BHSG member Mr Roderick MacArthur, who was in the British Army for 30 years, will be giving an illustrated talk entitled "The King's German Legion Organisational Structure Over the Years". The talk will include the standard British Army structure of the Napoleonic period, the pre-1803 Hanoverian Army system, followed by authorised establishments of the KGL from 18031815.
