The Stay With Me singer has been advised to receive suspension microlaryngoscopy surgery by a specialist.

Smith said: “I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last ten days but unfortunately they haven’t recovered and I am going to need surgery.

“I’m so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at. The doctors say I will be back in six-to-eight weeks and I cannot wait to sing for you all soon.”

Smith is expected to make a full recovery.

The singer recently cancelled tour dates in Australia and Japan. Other upcoming cancellations include Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Capital FM’s Summertime Ball.

He will resume touring in July once he has completed his prescribed healing time following the procedure.

Smith has promised fans he will be first on the team sheet for next year’s Wild Life Festival.

Disappointed fans will be entitled to a refund until midnight next on Thursday, May 14, and are advised to contact the ticket agent with whom they purchased their tickets.

Those who booked in person at the Shoreham Centre should contact Ticketmaster. No replacement for Smith has been named at this point.

Many of Smith’s fans have taken to Twitter to voice their anguish over the news.

Kiera Mivor wrote: “Hearing Sam Smith isn’t playing at Wild Life anymore acc makes me want to cry, he honestly has the most beautiful voice on the planet.”

Meanwhile @abiblain tweeted: “Smith pulled out of Wild Life the universe doesn’t want be to see him.”

However, not everyone was heartbroken about the cancellation.

Hazel Elizabeth wrote: “Think I might be the only person glad that Sam Smith has cancelled his Wild Life appearance. Good Lord he’s annoying!”

Wild Life 2015 is taking place at Shoreham Airport on June 6 and 7.
