Discount food retailer Aldi has spoken out about its plans to open a new store in Horsham.

A planning application by Aldi to demolish the former Curry’s building at Tanbridge Retail Park and replace it with a new supermarket is to be considered by Horsham District Council next Tuesday (November 1.)

But planning officers are recommending that the application should be turned down. They say the new building would be ‘overly dominant’ because of its design and proximity to Worthing Road.

But local residents have submitted hundreds of letters of support to the council saying they are in favour of the new store. Many say that Aldi offers ‘great value for money which is especially important when the cost of living at this time is rising so quickly.’

And a spokesperson for Aldi today thanked people for sharing their views.

“The proposed new Aldi foodstore in Horsham represents a multi-million-pound investment into the town and will ensure that local residents have access to our award-winning range,” he said.

"If approved by councillors, the store will deliver jobs, increased connectivity, and security on and around the site, as well as delivering affordable choice at a time when it is most needed.

"We have been extremely grateful for the unprecedented levels of support shown by local people. If approved, we are aiming to open the store by next summer.”

Aldi, which owns the retail park site, has previously said that if planning permission is refused by the council, it will convert the existing building into a store. That would not require planning consent.
