300 at climate change meeting

Around 300 people attended a public meeting in Lewes last night (Thursday) to launch the town's climate change awareness campaign.

Keynote speakers at the town hall were Guardian journalist Polly Toynbee and Lewes MP Norman Baker.

Ms Toynbee described it as a spectacular meeting and told the audience the political 'green arms race' had begun this week with major initiatives by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, and Conservative leader, David Cameron.

Mr Baker said the initiative was 'typical of Lewes in being ahead of the game'.

He said climate change was the 'real weapon of mass destruction'.

Mr Baker said aviation was the 'nightmare that had to be tackled' and flying to the south of Portugal and back for 10 would have to stop.
