Aid sought as pressure on charity rises

A SIDLESHAM cat and rabbit rescue centre has won a long battle for planning permission to replace deteriorating sheds with a dedicated building.

The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre at Holborrow Lodge, in Chalder Lane, was founded by Monique Turk in 1986 and has rehomed 10,000 cats and rabbits in the past 22 years.

It has prestigious support, with actress Alexandra Bastedo as president, fellow actress Susan Jameson as patron and staunch backing by the Duchess of Richmond.

The new centre, which was given permission on appeal after Chichester District Council refused to allow the scheme, is expected to cost between 350,000 and 400,000.

It will incorporate a veterinary treatment room and recovery centre, reception, feed room, sluice and toilets for disabled people.

Last year, the centre had to turn away more than 1,000 cats and rabbits that needed new homes but the new premises will double its capacity from the current 140 cats and 35 rabbits. The centre also works tirelessly on neutering and feral problems.

Ms Jameson was at the centre last week, viewing the area where work on the new premises will start shortly.
