Mrs Jones, of Westminster Drive, received her prize from TV gardener Chris Collins, who is best known for looking after the Blue Peter garden.

Mrs Jones has led the Aldwick in Bloom volunteers for 15 years. She began when the parish had barely a hanging basket to be seen.

But her efforts have contributed to successive triumphs in the regional competition as well as Britain in Bloom.

Her enthusiasm has inspired residents, community groups and businesses to contribute to making Aldwick a brighter and more colourful place through eye-catching floral displays.

"The award is really something," said Mrs Jones.

"It brought a tear to my eye and I was really touched to receive it.

"It's lovely to think that everything I have done for Aldwick has been noticed.

people have worked hard to make the area so successful.

"This award is on behalf of all those who have put in so much work and effort.

"I have pulled it all together and everyone benefits from seeing the flowers looking nice."

The personal triumph for Mrs Jones '“ one of three such awards handed out this year '“ was among four presentations for Aldwick at the ceremony.

The parish kept its silver-gilt rating and overall winner status in its urban community category as well as retaining silver gilt for Marine Park Gardens.

The fourth success went to Pat and Colin Geldard, of Old Manor Cottage, Barrack Lane, for their outstanding front garden. This was at the discretion of the judges and is seldom awarded.

It is not yet known if Aldwick's success will see it take part in the 2010 Britain in Bloom competition.

Bognor, meanwhile, was awarded silver status in the small towns' category, while the restored Hotham Park gained silver-gilt.
