ARMY OFFICER'S SKI-ING SUCCESS

A VINES Cross Army officer has been helping his unit to win a cluster of honours in Nordic skiing in the French Alps.

Captain Tony Piper, 28, was competing for 3 Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in Exercise Pipedown a competition open to troops serving in Germany.

Biathlon skiing combines the strength-sapping demands of cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship.

'I've been skiing for four years,' said Tony, a former pupil of Lewes Old Grammar School. 'I appreciate the high-level of fitness Nordic requires plus the concentration of shooting.'

Tony, who has qualified for the Army Championships for the past three years, will be leaving for Iraq as soon as the skiing season finishes.
