ATC cadets aid St Dunstan's

ENTERPRISING Air Training Corps cadets staged a barn dance at St Stephen's Church Hall to raise money for blind ex-servicemen.

Last night Number 2262 Squadron, Air Training Corps welcomed two representatives from St Dunstan's to their headquarters at the Down Drill Hall.

Cadets William Ide and Mitchell Humby presented Colin Williams and Gerry Jackson with 100.

Colin Williams told the Squadron about the work of St Dunstan's in offering ex-service personnel essential training to counter the loss of their vision.

Already, the squadron is planning further fund-raising on behalf of the ex-service home on the cliffs near Brighton.

On Sunday, September 2 they will be taking part in a 13-mile sponsored walk around Bewl Reservoir.

As their commanding officer, Flight Lieutenant Tom Turley, explained, the walk is likely to involve additional features which will put the cadets to the test.

The busy squadron has recently helped at RIAT -the Royal International Air Tattoo in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund. Cadets will be collecting in aid of Wings Appeal at Shoreham Airshow.

Meanwhile, they are still working on the second phase of the flight simulator they have built at the Drill Hall.

In the first phase, they built a cockpit enclosure around a pilot's seat, control column, rudder pedals, throttles and other controls and installed three computer screens and associated hardware and software which enables cadets to undergo realistic training o a wide variety of fixed-wing aircraft.

The second phase will involve construction of a similar enclosure around a helicopter pilot's seat which will offer flight simulation training on a variety of helicopter types.
