Battle of Hastings celebration gets £150,000 boost

Plans to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings have received a significant boost with an award of £150,000 from Arts Council England it was announced last night.

Hastings Borough Council was given the money to support a major contemporary arts festival next year.

A spokesman said the ROOT 1066 International Festival will give contemporary artists the opportunity to explore and offer new perspectives on the most famous date in English history.

“The Battle of Hastings changed the course of history and represents the root of modern English culture,” said council leader Peter Chowney.

“Its legacy can be felt today in numerous ways – and this is what the festival will explore.

“Artists from Hastings and around the UK, and also from Normandy, will contribute work to a festival programme that will run through September, 2016, closing on October 2.

“Local partners include the Jerwood Gallery, De La Warr Pavilion, Battle Festival and Project Artworks.

“Confirmed artists include Chris Levine, who will present a spectacular outdoor light and sound installation, and Hastings based filmmaker Andrew Kotting collaborating with writer Iain Sinclair.”

An open call for proposals has just been announced with artists from Hastings and beyond encouraged to apply.

“The reputation of Hastings as a centre for the highest quality arts and culture continues to grow and the ROOT 1066 International Festival will raise that profile still further whilst offering unique experiences for both local and visiting audiences,” said borough council spokesman Kevin Boorman.
