Beach patrol keeps an eye on those jet skiers

Only last week, an Observer correspondent drew attention to the fast-growing use of the sea off Herbrand Walk by jet-skiers.

The area is already highly popular with wind-surfers - offering the potential for danger if all concerned don't keep to the marked sea lanes.

But the team were already on the case.

For the second weekend in succession, beach-users congregating at the once-isolated spot have found they are under the watchful eye of the Beach Patrol - working from a temporary base.

Timber and canvas from broken deck chairs has been transformed by the team into an easily-assembled hut which can be carried by car roof rack from their Colonnade headquarters to Herbrand Walk and assembled in minutes.

The brightly painted red hut provides them with shelter from sun or run and makes an easily-identifiable reference point for wind surfers and jet-skiers alike who need to check local regulations or call for assistance.

The team brush aside wise-cracks about "What time's the next Punch And Judy Show." They know they've hit on a neat answer.
