Big Fundraising Week success at Steyning school

Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form hosted a number of special events during its Big Fundraising Week.

The big week of fundraising began on Wednesday, September 21, as part of the Sixth Form College ‘Induction Party’ event. This event raised £400 for The Cystic Fibroses Trust and a local charity at Clayton Farm, where animals on the farm are used to provide therapeutic care for disabled children and other vulnerable young people. The ‘Induction Party’ is held every year to welcome new students to the College, and provides an opportunity to raise some valuable funds for one of this year’s chosen Sixth Form College charities.

The students had fun dressing up and dancing the night away. The ‘American College’ theme resulted in a plethora of costumes including cheerleaders, frat boys and sorority girls. The evening was a success due to the hard work of the Student Charity Committee, led by the senior officers, who organised the event. Thanks are extended to all of the teachers who supported the evening and to in-house technicians Jack Wallace and John Martin who provided the music and made sure that the dance floor was full all evening.

On Friday, September 30, for the 11th year running, the Sixth Form College took part in this national Macmillan Cancer fundraising event, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. For a £2 donation, participants were served coffee, tea or hot chocolate and a range of homemade cakes. Lemon drizzle, mud pie, fruit cake, chocolate brownies and flapjacks were some of the mouth-watering delights baked by sixth formers for this event. Boarding students also spent their evening enrichment time baking. ‘Master Baker’ prizes were awarded to Paisley Thomson and Emily Johnson, together with Yasmin Kyriacous and Tayler Stevenson. Musical entertainment throughout the event was provided by Year 12 and Year 13 musicians.

This event was organised by Year 13 Liaison Committee along with the A Level Health and Social Care Students. The Sixth Form College Students would like to extend their thanks to local businesses and parents, who gave very generously to the raffle this year, including donations and vouchers from The Castle Inn, Bramber, Steyning Football Club, Cobblestone Tea House, Bloomsbury Clinic, La Maison Verte, Clock Tower Florist, Co-op, Steyning Stationers, Waitrose and Lagoon Water Sports Hove. With 500 students in the Sixth Form College and over 200 staff, £1,200 was raised to help Macmillan provide vital support to those affected by cancer.

A total of £1,600 has been raised across this Big Fundraising Week.
